Manipur High Court stays Pherzawl DC order on Senvon VA suspension

Pherzawl/Imphal, June 19, 2020: Manipur High Court has stayed the decision of Pherzawl District Deputy Commissioner to temporarily suspend the ruling members of Senvon Village Authority.

The SDO of Parbung on June 8, 2020, had recommended the suspension of the current Village Authority members as “the public have no trust” on them. The district administration had also decided to constitute an ad-hoc Village Development Committee to take up the functions of the VA.

However, the petitioners – Mr. Zohminglien and others – stated before the HC that the DC “has no power or jurisdiction” to issue an order to temporarily suspend the VA under the Manipur Hill Authorities Act, 1956.

The court after hearing both sides stayed the DC order dated June 12, 2020, until the next returnable date. The next hearing will be on July 20, 2020.

Meanwhile, sources said that the incumbent vice-chairman will act as the village chairman during the pendency of the case. No statement has been issued by the district administration over the court’s decision.
